Australia Let it All be FREE...

It started off with Sausage Sizzle (+ onions yum!) and Damper (+maple syrup yum!) @ Strathfield Park. Every year the council sets up some recycling display and provides breakfast to celebrate Oz Day.

This year, Slokky opted for a vegie pattie, I think this is his attempt to get ready for our diet?

Fuelled up, it was time for Freebie #2, visit to the Sydney Jewish Museum. No food was consumed there, but it was an excellent museum to visit and reminds you of the destruction that humans are capable of.

After an enlightened few hrs, it was off for Freebie #3, coffee/tea/cold drink at the NRMA cafe. Alas, we were too late, the cafe closed 20 mins before we were able to make it. Normally I would be quite sad at the prospect of missing out on a freebie, but it was such a glorious day and Slokky hadn't made me mad all day, so I let that one go. Plus, we had already filled up with Chicken and smoothies from New Zealand Natural (see smoothies review).

The day of indulgence is not over. We ended the day @ a BBQ at my parents place. This was the usual affair of steak, lamb cutlets, prawns, calamari, and any manner of vegetables that they can lay their hands on, as well as fruit galore. My parents can lay claim to having the healthiest bbq around.

Then came the finale, Elaine made me a Mango Cheesecake, which became a Mango SemiFreddo because there was not enough gelatine to set the cheese layer. It tasted good though, even if the mangoes weren't that sweet!

New Zealand Natural Smoothies

Here's a new insight. My new favourite smoothie place is now New Zealand Natural. They use their ice-creams to make their smoothies, and they taste great and have great flavour combinations. My sis and I tried 2 of their smoothies, but I didn't have my camera or pen with me, so didn't catch the names. Never fear, I will be going back... when I get next year's eBook voucher...The only bad thing though, they are more expensive than all the other competing brands :(

Go Pho Before Pho Goes

I must be getting old, things seem to change very quickly nowadays.

It was networking day so I went to visit Hunter Arcade food court. The cheap $6 Viet place is no more, replaced by a still cheap, but not as cheap Viet place. The crepe place has closed down, and about 3 new Japanese, including a sushi train, a few new Koreans and a Thai, "fry while you watch" place has opened up. There is still a bit of competition with one Japanese place having "All Meals $6". It looked quite tempting but I decided that every food court or otherwise outing I've had was for Jap food, I decided to give something else a try.

It being a cold day and me having a really blocked nose made me want to have noodle soup. I tried the Chicken Pho at the Viet place. It cost me $5.50 and was very quick (yup, real Viet place).

The soup base was ok, but I have had much better, especially at An Restaurant at Bankstown (Go check it out, they only serve Pho!). Anyway, back to my Pho, it came with a bunch of bean sprouts which pleased me. Noodles were standard. After applying chilies, it was a pretty good lunch. The chicken wasn't the best and there wasn't much of it, but that was ok with me too. (Still wondering how I'm going to last with all that meat next month...) All in all, good value and a good feed in the city for $5.50 at lunch. If I go to Hunter again, I will be giving that Jap place a go.... but I wonder if it will still be there next time I go back....

Ice Kreme + Meat = Pig

The highlight of the week was the Krispy Kreme FREE ice-cream day. For more info, see my review.

Saturday afternoon was BBQ at Nic & Slow's. Of course BBQ meant meat (sausages, steaks), veges (loads of salads and plain potatoes!) and snacks (chips and dips and tarts too), and being Nic's house, cakes (cinnamon sponge and jam sponge) and watermelon (just watermelon)!

Sadly, I have to report that Slokky and I will be going on a Pre-Holiday diet after CNY, so the Gluttonous Sins category will be very sparse until our holidays starts, (although Slokky misbehaviour should still get a good workout) but I promise you that once that starts, there will be LOTS and LOTS of entries!

Krispy Kreme Ice Cream

The highlight of the week was the Krispy Kreme FREE ice-cream day. I mean, what could be better than FREE ice-cream? Slokky and I arrived at Auburn KK before the designated 12pm start, and fought it out with the kids to be the first in line

Taste

Tick, tick, time passed very slowly when you wait for ice-cream. We watched the kids in front of us ponder what flavour they wanted. The choices were:

  • vanilla
  • chocolate
  • cookies and kreme
  • passionfruit and mango sorbet
  • caramel
  • macadamia
Of course, they ALL wanted chocolates.

Finally, at 12.02, they started serving us. What they didn't tell us though, was that it was only 1 scoop per person, and we got stamped before getting ice-cream. I had 1 scoop of macadamia, it was pretty good, but I've had better - pretty creamy, but not enough macadamia taste or macadamias for that matter. Slokky had cookies and kreme - not as good as mine, and the cookies didn't taste very good, too much vanilla essence.

Juice Bar Smoothies Head to Head

Here's CC's ranking of all the juice bar smoothies I've tried:

  1. New Zealand Natural
  2. Boost
  3. Quicki

My Favourite Food Courts near Work

  1. MLC Centre - good atmosphere and great choices
  2. Mid City Centre - you can always find a seat
  3. Hunters Arcade - cheap Asian in the city
and that's about it as far as food courts go.

Ton Ton Japanese

I have been discovering some great places to eat near work.

This is my No 1 choice in Food Court food. The place is called Ton Ton Japanese at Chifley Plaza. They do great cooked dishes with rice as well as noodles. I have tried so far:
  • Chicken schinzel Curry
  • Tempura Fish
  • Tonkatsu Ramen
Can't wait to try the sushi as well!

Teas and Scones

Yes, I know, I am supposed to be on a diet, but you can't possibly expect me not to eat anything interesting for 2 months do you?

There has been much fewer special food moments, but I thought I would give a mention to the Scones and Tea session at Vanessa's house. The special occasion was to mark the watching of the BBC Series of Pride and Prejudice, yes, all 6 hours of it.

Scones made with lemonade and cream were baked and served, with, what else, strawberry jam and cream. I consumed three hot scones, as well as various other lovely junk food. I also tried the divine smelling and ok tasting lychee tea that Shan and Christina got me for my b'day from Bristrol and Brooks.

Yes, I exceeded my carb intake and my indulgence food count that day, but you can't say no to teas and scones can you? (Plus... You can't really say no to Vanessa either...)

Next week I will be quite stuffed, lots of free food moments coming up where I will indulge in carbs and fat, can't wait.

Good Living Growers’ Market

Went to our 1st Growers Market of the year on Sat. This is one of my favourite activities. I love looking at all the different and unusual products - it used to be quite exclusive, but nowadays you can buy most of the stuff at the shops, so it's not quite as exciting anymore. However, I still really enjoy taste testing before I buy (or not buy)!

Every market I always buy 2 things without fail though, these are:

  • Bread from La Tartine (not actual website but has good product listing) - They make the most heavenly organic sourdoughs. You can't buy their bread anywhere else (they have no retail outlet). I have tried almost all the varieties, including multi grain, wholemeal, spelt, pumpkin, rye... but my 2 favourites are the carraway seed and the fruit bread. The breads aren't cheap.... $5 for the carraway and other loaves, and $6 for the fruit loaf, but in my opinion, worth every cent!
  • Dried fruit from Honest to Goodness- These people sells all types of organic dried fruits and nut. I usually can't justify paying much more for organic, but 2 standouts from this shop are the dried dates (@$20/kg they are actually cheaper than conventional dates) and my new find, dried apricots (@$15/kg). I always buy 1 kg of dates at this place, next time I am going to branch out and try their other fruits.

We splashed out on venison at this market. This meat was always something I wanted to try but could never justify the price. Since we've been on the CSIRO diet and have to eat a lot of lean meat, we've decided to give it a go because, well, you get pretty sick of eating chicken and beef. Slokky did a roast yesterday, and the meat was really really tender and lean, but not chewy! I've decided this is a meat I would like to eat once in a while.

Max Brenner

Little known fact - Max Brenner is a chocolatier from Israel, and not some bald guy from Oz... although I think he is bald! People get the perception that he's from Oz because Max Brenner is not very well known internationally at all and Australia is one of the few places it has outlets. I've been trying to find out more about Max without much luck.

Food
The Max Brenner outlet at DJs in the city has a very small menu, but it has everything to do with chocolates! It consists of:
  • various types of chocolates
  • chocolate "shot" served in their trademark suckao
  • "traditional" hot chocolates and coffee
  • chocolate desserts including waffles, souffles, muffins, banana boat, ice-cream
  • tasting plate of Max Brenner praline

I ordered something from the chocolate menu, the Java Dark Chocolate with Orange Blossom, $4.00 - It came in the cute little jug/mug thing. The chocolate taste was very very faint, and it was not very creamy at all, but the hint of orange taste was great, a little like a jaffa. Slokky ordered the Italian chocolate dark, $4.50 from the traditional menu - very creamy, with a darker chocolate hit than mine, but unfortunately, it was very sweet! Alvin tried the Yu... white chocolate, $4.00 from the chocolate menu - I think the consensus was that it tasted ok, but I didn't get a taste so you will have to take their word for it. I am probably too prejudice to judge though since I have a thing against white "chocolate". (In my opinion, no cacao = no chocolate). In terms of hot chocolate, I have to give the edge to Lindt Cafe - their dark chocolate is much creamier and less sweet, but I don't really enjoy the atmosphere and especially the staff there, plus it's more expensive, so they both have their ups and downs, and no one has won over me yet.

Carol and Alvin both tried the dessert as well. Carol had a babka - which is a cake/muffin like creation with chocolate swirls through it. It comes with melted (milk) chocolate dipping sauce. I had a taste, and it was ok, the cake was a bit dry so you def needed to dip it in the sauce, but I prefer Carol's homemade chocolate cake or a moist muffin. It was fun to eat though, just make sure you're wearing dark-coloured clothing! Alvin had a souffle, which by the looks of things, was made with dark chocolate. Again, no idea how it tastes but he managed to finish it!

Rating - 5

Atmosphere
I think this is more of an afternoon tea place, but in my opinion, there is always too many people for it to be cosy. We went at lunchtime and it was pretty busy. Having said that, I really like their layout. There is a liquid chocolate mixer at the entrance, and the cafe is all dark timber furnishing. The tables are a bit small and the space a bit squishy, but being surrounded by chocolates is kinda exciting.

Rating - 2.5

Service
There's really no "service" as such. You look at the menu they have up, go to the counter, place your order, pay and they deliver the food to you. Still, they were slow in handling my request (I had a 10% off voucher) but I did manage to get an extra stamp on the loyalty card (their loyalty rewards are much better than Lindt's though). They brought the wrong food to the wrong table and were just really really slow. (I guess really not the staff's fault but the process ;p)

C-factor
Expensive chocolate that's not that tasty, but good atmosphere and a unique experience. Would I go back again? Only to collect more stamps on my loyalty card. An occasional visit destination.
Alvin and Carol were great company though. I know why Slokky likes Alvin so much now.

Woolloomooloo Bay Hotel

Yeah, another lunch on the house. We are celebrating the successful completion of Phase 1 of our project, so fitting the occasion, off we go to an upmarket pub.

Food

I think they are calling themselves a "Steak and Ale House" nowadays, but I didn't try the steak or the Ale, so I don't know how that fares. The concept is one up on that of other pubs. You still order from the counter, but they deliver to your table! Alas, you have to get your own drinks at the bar.

First up, I shared a half dozen natural oyster $18. Well, you can't really mess up oysters. These were fresh, if not that plump or briny. We also got some garlic bread, which were good but where's the garlic? It was more like herb bread. Some people ordered Nachos, but I never understand their appeal. It is only ever nice for the first few minutes, until the topping goes cold and the corn chips go soggy, after which you can't eat anymore. These met a similar fate.

Next up, I went for the un-summary braised lamb shanks with root vegetables. A melt off the bone lamb shank arrived, stewed with root vegetables. This was one of the best lamb shanks I've had, and much much better than the one at the beer garden at establishment.

I didn't think they offer up any desserts, but I got my worth by conning Kevin to let me get some Magnums from the convenient Store next door.

Top that up with some Coronas, a few G&Ts, and even baileys on ice, and I was very full and very satisfied.

Atmosphere

This place has obviously had a bit of a scrub up. The outdoors is obviously important for a pub situated right across from the W hotel and right near the water. They have a great little beer garden out the back, as well as al fresco dining out front. The music is funky, the crowd relatively young and out to have a good time.

Service
Well, this is a pub... so I didn't expect much. The guy taking our order was ok, but I was surprised that the barmaid didn't know how to make a martini!! Fan was not pleased and Alan made sure that got rectified! He asked at least 3 different barmaids and even asked to see the manager. Finally, someone somewhere knew how to make a martini, and Fan got her drink, but the verdict? It tasted awful!

Poor old Alan obviously haven't seen me eat. He actually bet me $2 that I won't be able to polish off my lamb shank. Needless to say, about 10 minutes later, I've licked my plate clean and earned my dues. Asides from that bit of fun, it was also perfect weather for outside dining, and with some great company and time off work, what else can a girl want?

Bistrode

Food

The food can be described as high-class bistro style. The restaurant name is obviously a play on the word Bistro, "de" comes courtesy of the husband and wife team who own/cook/run the place, Jeremy and Jane Strode.

The meal got off to a good start, because they offered me two things I really love. Those of you who follow my blog will know that I have a thing for bread. Bistrode offers two styles, white sourdough and spelt sourdough. Guess which one I chose? ... Yes, it was the spelt. And it tasted wonderful.

We decided to forgo the entree so we can save some room for dessert. The entree selection sounded pretty good though! For mains, I chose:

  • steak - This came with a huge knob of herb butter and a huge mushroom, cooked medium as requested. The meat was extremely tender and juicy, the mushroom can be described in the same words. I am sure I ingested more fat than I had eaten for the whole of yesterday but it was worth it.
  • pork cheek - This came served on a bed of mashed pumpkin, which was very creamy. The cheeks? Consisted of 1/4 meat and 3/4 fat, so needless to say, had lots of flavour. When I wasn't thinking about eating straight fat, it was wonderful, very melt in the mouth. Who knew pigs have such fat cheeks?

Rating - 8

Atmosphere

Bistrode is also in the semi-suburban part of Surry Hills (i.e. not Crown St), giving it a very local and cosy feel. It pops up on you out of nowhere - there are no signs and the lighting is very very dim. The bar actually takes up a large part of this small restaurant, but there is a nice courtyard, albeit next to the toilets...
It's actually a bit hard to make out everything, but no high class show off material here, just solid, functional furnishing. I don't even remember seeing any paintings or decorations...

Service

For most part, the staff were very charming and handled our group of 12 very well. We had different people ordering at different times and I ordered 2 mains (not both for me!). We got all our orders delivered with a smile. The only gripe I had was that my glass of water sat empty for a long time. Luckily they refilled it after dessert.

Our meal was paced very nicely, but we were last to leave at around 11 on a Wed night.

I had the best time. I forgot how much I enjoy hanging out with Seng people. It's weird that we've been out of uni for quite awhile now and also that people haven't changed all that much.

To top it off, we got a classic David moment as well. On the menu, they have an item listed as..... Now, several people were confused why this "dessert" was so expensive, but Luke & Tsa somehow convinced David that it was a plate to share that is why, and he actually ordered one. It was only when Luke & Tsa decided to roll around laughing that he realised it wasn't an expensive dessert afterall. And for those who still haven't worked it out, the "dessert" is a cookbook written by the chef and his wife.

Malay Chinese Take Away

Food
This was not the first time I visited, but it was the first time I actually ate there (long story). I'm sure those of you who work in the city are very familiar with the place and the concept, but for these who aren't, here's the deal.

You go up to the counter and order, there are the usual Malay dishes, soup noodles, and a bain marie containing Malaysian hawker dishes.

You pay and they give you a ticket. You go to find a seat, and as soon as you sit down, your number gets called. You go up to the counter to get your meal, then you dig in! Simple really.

In the interest of comparison, I chose the Har Mee ($8.50) - which is a mix of Hokkien noodles and vermecelli in a seafood scented broth, topped with some prawns, bean sprouts and a slice of meat.

Har Mee is one of my favourite Malaysian dishes, alongside laksa, nasi lamek, Hainanese chicken Rice...you get the idea, I really like South-East Asian cuisine. I have eaten at quite a few Malaysian places around Sydney, including Temasek (Parramatta), Ginger & Spice (Neutral Bay), Baba Laksa (King St) and the Malaysian at Imperial Arcade. This version was not as good as the one at Imperial, the soup did not have that deep seafood taste, and the prawns were appalling! The meat was ok, nothing fancy, but it was soft and not too fatty. The bowl contained the right ratio of noodles to meat to soup, although I would usually prefer more prawns than the 4 halves I was given, but these prawns didn't look like prawns and certainly didn't taste like them either! They tasted dried up, a bit like flour really!

I've heard the laksa is quite good though, so next time I go I will do the laksa comparison test. Even though the food didn't score highly with me today, I will give this place another go.

Atmosphere
Decor you say? What decor? It is situated in a basement, there are tables and chairs.... wait, I think there are some plastic pot plants scattered around, and harsh globe lighting. You come here to eat then go, not to enjoy the surrounds.

The fun of it is fighting for a table. You basically sit there and gawk at all the other diners, willing them not to linger and chat, and as soon as a table is vacated, you have to swoop on it before someone else. Once you secure your seat though, you can feel smug and pity all the other souls who will have to fight their way through.

I don't know if this can be counted as a plus side, but you always see people you know there. On the way in I bumped into some senior Westpac people, and just before leaving I bumped into some old Westpac grads. I guess this might have to do with the close proximity to several Westpac buildings...

Service
Well, they are efficient, and I like efficient people. They can calculate change quickly and they are very persistent when they call your number out, although you can never quite hear exactly what the number is... maybe they need to adopt the bingo calling system, hehe, it would be much more interesting if they called out "two fat ladies" instead of "88"

Even though this was a cheap place, compared to other joints in its price range, it doesn't get my vote. Imperial Arcade beats it hands down in value for money. Even though Temasek and Ginger and Spice are much more expensive, you get better quality.

However, it is fun to people watch and fight for tables, and I had good company for lunch, so

Zimme

Food

Zimme get the prize for the worst pizza I have ever had - That's right, much much worst than the ones at Pizza Hut or Dominos - at least there you still get taste... We ordered 2 salads, 4 pizzas and a pasta from the menu. All the pizzas came with the thin base, however, the dough was charred, there was no bubbling around the edge, and I definitely couldn't detect the woodfired taste. They tasted only warm, and the ingredients were not even fresh! I don't know what kind of cheese they used, but they retain their shape when melted!

Caesar with a Diff erence ($13) - Cos lettuce, an orange looking cheese, bacon pieces, and supposedly chicken, although I didn't get any chicken from the handful that I ate, so can't comment on that, but judging by the rest of the salad, wasn't a great loss. They had no croûtons, what kind of salad was this? At least the sauce was ok, however, the plastic tasting cheese was not.

Greek Salad ($11) - lettuce, tomato, spanish onion, olives, feta cheese, cucumbers. At least they got this right. The sauce was ok, and was one of the things I actually enjoyed eating.

Italiano Pizza ($15) - I think this had tomato sauce, olives, pepperonis, onions, capsicum. This turned out to be the best besting out of the four...which doesn't say much.

Neptune Pizza ($17) - Tomato sauce, avocado, prawns, octopus, capsicum. This was the worst pizza of the lot! I expected good things as I love prawns and avocado, but they gave us unripe avocadoes and I couldn't even really taste the prawns.

Bali Pizza ($16) - Satay beef, or was that tandoori sauce? Who knows, and dollop of yoghurt. The presentation of this pizza was a mess of brown looking stuff with a huge white dollop of yoghurt in the middle. The taste - it was hot, and that's it.

Shanghai Pizza ($16) - This one had tomato sauce, chicken, sliced potato, something else.... and yes, capsicum (and only the green ones too, just like all the other pizzas!) This was another one of those hot ones, and that's all I remember...

Smoked Chicken & Pesto Penne ($13.50) - I actually only tasted the sauce because:

  • It looked like penne drowned in a pool of green guck
  • Judging by the quality of the other offerings, I had a feeling I wasn't missing out on anything
  • Everyone else said it was tasteless and was madly adding parmesan cheese to it before it was eaten
  • There was still a lot of it left at the end of the night

In summary, ok salads, crap pizza, even crappier pasta. The least said the better.

Atmosphere

Zimme is located in the Shire, right past Tom Ugly's Bridge. There are rows of eateries there, including the legendary Pauls Famous Hamburgers (great burgers there btw, the lines are really long on weekends) and it was a busy Saturday night - it took us ages to find parking.

When we walked into Zimme the place was half empty and had no trouble sitting the 10 of us at 7.30pm... This really should have told us something about the place, especially when all the other places were packed out.

A bit on the decor.... the walls were yellow, it was certainly spacious and not noisy, and the chairs looked like the ones from home

Service

I guess I didn't have much expectations from the staff, but we stood at the entrance for a good few minutes before anyone even attempted to seat us. It wasn't like they were busy or anything. Another 10 minutes and they offered us the menu and asked if we wanted drinks. We had to keep asking them to fill up our water, but at least they got our order right and calculated our bill correctly...

Alio

Food

We all tried the Degustation Menu, which changes according to what products are available that day. Unfortunately my camera malfunctioned, so I was not able to capture all the courses, so I will have to rely on memory for this review.

Foccacia Bread and Cheese Sticks - Pretty soon after we were seated, the waiters brought out some generous serves of foccacia bread, which were very soft, and accompanied by the olive oil, made a good start to the meal. Overall I rate this average, the olive oil was good for the job, but I have tasted much better. I don't think any bread will compare to the ones I had at Bel Mondo years ago. This also did not measure up to the Sourdoughs I get at La Tartine or Brassarie Bread, but it was definitely better than some of the bread rolls that gets offered in a lot of restaurants! The cheese sticks though were excellent, crunchy and with the right amount of cheese. They get extra points just for the fact that you can play with them 'cos they're so looongg! They were also the perfect accompaniment for the ...

Pumpkin Soup - Served as an amuse bouche. It was creamy and foamy, and went perfectly with the cheese sticks! Apart from that, it tasted like...Pumpkin Soup.

Buffalo mozzarella with verdura mista of chargrilled eggplant, zucchini, peppers and 25 year old balsamic vinegar - It was sad to see that the balsamic vinegar was actually younger than me, but its flavour married very well in this dish. The vinegar certainly lifted the vegetables to another level.

Orecchiette with blue swimmer crab meat, celery and salsa rossa - The pasta was a little soft for my taste, but the seafood broth like sauce really sang out. I would have liked a bit more crab meat but I guess you get what you pay for!

Chargrilled salmon fillet with green and white asparagus and bagna cauda dressing - Yum! I love salmon, and Alio's was cooked just right, at about a medium. I guess because the salmon was good, the sauce didn't really matter as much. Alio should be commended for the restrain they showed in the sauce. I also love asparagus, theirs were very soft and mild in flavour.

Oven roasted spiced rack of lamb with roasted red and yellow peppers marinated with garlic, capers and basil - This was a real lamb rack, unlike the one I had at Sevardi Cucina Italiana at Beecroft, which was the worst so called "rack" of lamb I have eaten, and a rip off at that!!! But back to this lamb rack. The meat was served medium, it was nicely rested with a good lamb taste. The sauce was heavier than the other dishes so far. It was very suitable for this dish, but I found it a bit salty.

Mango Sorbet - I was really hoping for pineapple sorbet just so I could have Luke's as well, but alas, we got mango sorbet. This was served in a Chinese style spoon, and tasted just like the mango part of a Weis Bar! Fortunately I love Weis bars, but I wonder if they make their own sorbet?

Choux puff with hazelnut cream and chocolate sauce - I have to say I was disappointed by the dessert. The pastry was nice enough, quite crunchy in part, however, I couldn't really taste the hazelnut in the cream. This dessert was very filling, but that didn't stop me, or the rest of the party (Tsalina started it!), scraping the last of the sauce off our plates.

Locatelli Family tiramisu - My friends were nice enough to arrange a b'day "cake" for me. After being silenced by the wedding party, everyone was only too happy to sing Happy B'day as loud as they can when the tiramisu was brought out. After I "blew" out the sparkler and "cut" the "cake", we shared many (5) spoonfuls. It was one of the better tiramisu I've had, intense coffee flavour, but not bitter. Creamy but not too sweet.

Cocktails - I had a cocktail with some melon, cream and alcohol in it, oh, and a peach as well. I have no idea what type of alcohol, but it was a refreshing drinks. Disappointingly, only the St George Girls drank anything, actually, that wasn't a surprise at all. We had celebratory champagne and Cosmos.

In summary, the flavours really hit the spot. The food itself was not really innovative, but it was well executed and showed great skills in the marrying of flavours. The cocktail list showed flair, and had some interesting combinations. The potion size were just right, although if I had eaten any more bread than the half slice I had, I would not have been able to fit in that tiramisu, which would have been a great shame! The quality was not the best, but great for this price.

Atmosphere

Alio is located in the "suburban" part of Surry Hills, in a house-like building near the Surry Hills Shopping Village (more on that later!). It's a modest room with a front bar. The colour scheme is muted chocolate brown and whites. Yup, they had mood lighting. The lights were actually dimmed towards the end of the night - great attention to details. Overall, a discreet and comfortable room. We were seated in a section in the rear of the room, separated by some circular White Screens. The seats were comfortable, the tablecloth quite starched. According to Tsa, they played some sort of South American/Latino music too!

It was very quiet when we got there at 7pm, but things heated up, especially when Gernot?, the OS lecturer from UNSW was seated behind us and a wedding party showed up. That's something you don't see every day! The wedding party reserved around 20 seats and even had their speeches in the restaurant, speeches we all had to be quiet for!

Service

One of the greatest things about Alio is the service. I rang them up several times for booking and menu arrangements. They were very happy to answer my questions and accommodate my requests. They had no problems when I had to cancel 2 seats at the last minute.

The staff were friendly and more importantly, very efficient. There was always water on the table, and my meal was spaced just right. They even wished me Happy Bday when I left the restaurant.

$55 for the degustation menu was definitely good value for money.

The thrill of the night occurred on the way home. Slow & Nic and Christina all parked their car in the Surry Hills Shopping Village car park. Unfortunately, that car park closed some time before 11pm. I guess a lot of other people must have the same experience because we found a makeshift ramp (made up of planks of wood) propped up on the side. Slow managed to manoeuve his car slowly (pun intended!) over the ramp and out. Christina on the other hand, wasn't even thinking of using the ramp. She aimed in the general direction of the ramp, and put her foot down on the accelerator. She managed to get the car out of the carpark in one piece, but the poor ramp was totally destroyed. I guess the rest of the cars that were still in the carpark when we left will need to think of some other way to get out! What was so remarkable about the whole thing was that Christina had had no alcohol that night.... maybe you can absorb the effects by osmosis?

The Tea Centre

Food

I have been to the Tea Centre a few times before, but it's the first visit since I've started the reviews. I have eaten scones and tea before, and they were scrummy! However, this visit was purely for tea drinking.

This time, the tea of choice was Rooibos Fireside - Rooibos, orange peel, cinnamon and cloves. This tea retails for $8.50/100g but I ordered the large pot, which was $6.

The tea arrived in a funky teapot, with a little jug of milk on the side. This brew was an orange brown colour, the aroma was great, slightly sweet and very warm - must be the cinnamon and cloves at work. I always wonder how tea doesn't taste anything like they smell though. I couldn't really taste any of the ingredients mentioned, but this tea suits people who don't like a bitter tea. It is a bit like a herbal tea, but unlike those "scented" stuff in teabags.

The Tea Centre also scores points for its diversity and quality of its products.

Atmosphere

This particular Tea Centre is in a shopping centre, but there is not a lot of foot traffic. I sat at a table outside the shop, and it was a great place to conduct a conversation. The tables are quite far apart, and the staff mostly leave you alone.

Overall, a very Victorian atmosphere. The walls are painted a muted yellow, and there is a quirky collection of teapots, saucers, cups and other tea drinking accessories that act as sale item plus decor. I always feel I have to be very careful when I walk into the shop. The windows have a display of all their teas, each one in its little cup.

Service

They do their job. Two different people came to take our order, which is not really acceptable for such a small place. Oh well, better to have too much service than not enough.

I always feel special when I come here, you feel like you are transported to another place. However, I didn't get any special treatment, and nothing in particular stood out.
